These programs provide training, volunteer experiences and an opportunity to explore the world of work. The programs are certified by the US Department of Labor and the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Our goal is to enable participants to become more productive individuals and, where appropriate, to access opportunities for part time or full time employment.
All participants, supervised by vocational trainers, work each weekday on manual skills projects such as collating or assembling. When appropriate, participants also train at community based work sites such as restaurants, day care centers, senior centers, hospitals and soup kitchens to acquire skills necessary for finding and retaining a job. They are paid in accordance with the Labor Department's Wage and Salary Administration guidelines. Periodic diagnostic evaluations are completed by professional staff, and a service coordinator monitors each participant's progress.
The programs provide nutritional guidance, exercise breaks, recreational activities and participation in the GEC Therapeutic Horticultural Program as well as our Ceramics Studio. Individual and group counseling is provided as necessary.
Volunteers from the community and from local high school outreach programs are welcome. Inquiries are invited from companies which might provide contract work, or are interested in extending work, training and employment opportunities to participants.
