A Celebration of Life took place for Mildred Goldberg on January 21st on what would have been Mildred’s 100th birthday. Mildred passed away in December at the Olga Residence after a brief decline. Family, friends and GEC staff came together to pay tribute to Mildred, share stories and memories, and celebrate her life. Mildred lived a full and engaged life and was dearly loved by so many. She was introduced to GEC in 1994 at the age of 68; her nieces and legal guardians Marion Cleaver and Carol Goldberg wanted to explore services available to her throughout Brooklyn. In 1998, Mildred and her nieces thought it would be in her best interest to consider placement in GEC’s Olga Residence.
In Marion’s words, ”My Aunt was a resident in Olga’s House for almost 28 years. Her life was wonderful because of The Guild for Exceptional Children and the incredible staff and management of the house. There were so many people who were a part of Mildred’s life during the time she spent at Olga’s House that were responsible for her happiness.” Here at GEC we have been blessed with knowing Mildred over these many years, as well as Marion, Allen and Carol who have been devoted family members and great supporters of GEC.
Those present gathered to reflect on and celebrate a century of life and Mildred's resilience and joy. She was a graceful and dignified woman who filled our lives with beautiful moments. Mildred’s life touched so many and GEC was fortunate to be part of it. Those who knew Mildred will forever treasure her memory.
